Class Action Suit Filed Against AbbVie, Abbott Over Androgel Injuries

The makers of the testosterone product AndroGel face a class action suit filed on behalf of Canadians adversely affected by the potentially dangerous drug.

A new class action lawsuit has been filed against Abbott Laboratories and AbbVie over the testosterone product AndroGel in Canada, raising allegations similar to those brought in testosterone therapy lawsuits filed in the United States over side effects of AndroGel and other low T treatments. The AndroGel suit was filed late last month on behalf of all AndroGel users in Canada, alleging that the drug manufacturing companies concealed information about the risk of stroke, heart attack and other serious injuries associated with the testosterone gel. If you used a testosterone product like AndroGel, and you have since suffered a major side effect like heart attack or stroke, our consumer advocates at the Consumer Justice Foundation can help put you in touch with an experienced testosterone treatment attorney today.

Testosterone Therapy Side Effects

According to the AndroGel class action, AbbVie and Abbott aggressively promoted the testosterone product to consumers, without disclosing important safety information about the possible risks associated with the low T treatment. The manufacturing companies are also accused of maximizing profits by misleading the public about what types of men may require prescription treatments like AndroGel for low testosterone levels. According to the claims, even men experiencing low testosterone levels as part of the natural aging process were prescribed potentially dangerous testosterone products like AndroGel, which are meant to be used among men with diagnosed medical conditions like hypogonadism.

Heart Problems Linked to Low T Treatments

On July 15, Health Canada issued a warning to all Canadian residents, indicating that side effects of AndroGel and other testosterone treatments can increase the risk of dangerous cardiovascular side effects, citing a “growing body of evidence” linking testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) to major heart risks. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a similar probe into the potential side effects of testosterone therapy in January 2014, after several studies found a connection between testosterone products like AndroGel and life-threatening heart problems among users of all ages, regardless of the existence of any previous heart problems.

The testosterone litigation is relatively new in Canada, but in the United States, more than 150 testosterone therapy lawsuits have already been centralized in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, as part of a multidistrict litigation (MDL). AbbVie and Abbott Laboratories, as well as several other makers of low T products in the United States, face a growing number of TRT lawsuits filed on behalf of men who suffered stroke, heart attack, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism or sudden death after undergoing testosterone therapy. If you believe you have been adversely affected by side effects of testosterone replacement therapy, contact a knowledgeable TRT lawyer today for legal help.
