Class Action Filed Against Red Bull Maker

Safety of Energy Drinks Questioned Amid Recent Deaths
According to Careather’s complaint, Red Bull North America has made misleading claims suggesting that research has shown that its energy drink can “significantly improve a consumer’s physiological and mental performance beyond what a simple cup or coffee of caffeine pill would do for a consumer’s physiological and mental performance.” The lawsuit alleges that there is no existing scientific research that supports the company’s claims. The class action suit also challenges claims that Red Bull makes on its website, stating that there have been “numerous scientific studies” indicating that the energy drink increases concentration, performance, vigilance and reaction speed, stimulates metabolism, and improves overall well-being.
The Red Bull lawsuit comes at a time when the safety of energy drinks is being scrutinized by lawmakers and federal regulators, following a number of deaths and health problems allegedly linked to Red Bull, Rockstar, 5-Hour Energy, Monster and other similar products. According to information provided by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), there have been at least four deaths related to Monster Energy drinks, 13 deaths linked to 5-Hour Energy shots, and at least 13 nonfatal adverse event reports related to side effects of Rockstar energy drinks in recent years.
