Vita Food Products Recall

The products affected by this recall include packages of smoked Atlantic salmon that bear the Vita logo centered at the bottom of the 4 oz. package, which is black in color. Each package contains 4-5 slices of smoked salmon contained in a vacuum-sealed package that is 7 ¾” wide by 7 ¼” in height by ¼” in thickness. The Vita Food Products recall only affects packages that bear the SELL BY Date and Code of DEC 15 2011 01961B centered in the window on the front of each package.

Recalled Products Sold Across the U.S.

7,260 of the 8,088 affected retail packages were sold on or after July 25, 2011 at Publix stores in Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Alabama; Safeway stores in Alaska, California, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Idaho, Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and District of Columbia; Meijer stores in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky; Vons stores in California; Genuardi’s stores in Pennsylvania and New Jersey; Winn Dixie stores in Florida; and the Edgewater Produce store in Chicago, Illinois; and may be affected with the dangerous bacteria Listeria monocytogenes. In addition 828 individual retail packages of this product have possibly already been sold or are being offered for sale at grocery stores in Pittsburgh, PA and Buffalo, NY, as well as Northeast Ohio.

FDA Recommendations for Consumers

Consumers who purchased a Vita Food Products Atlantic salmon product with this particular SELL BY Date and Code from a retail store on or after July 25 should not consume any of the Vita Classic Premium Sliced Smoked Atlantic Nova Salmon product. Vita Food Products, Inc. asks that the product be sealed in a plastic bag or placed in a sealed container and returned to the retailer from which it was purchased. Vita Food Products also asks that any person who has purchased the recalled product call this telephone number – 1-800-989-8482 – during the hours of 8am and 5pm (Central) Monday through Friday. Consumers who are experiencing any unusual symptoms indicative of the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes are advised to go to an emergency room immediately or contact their physician for immediate medical advice.
