Stork Craft Drop-Side Crib Recall
Over two million Stork Craft drop-side cribs have been recalled due to the potential for the cribs’ drop-side rail to malfunction or become detached and cause severe infant injury and death. If the drop-side rail becomes partially detached, a dangerous V-gap may be exposed in which an infant’s neck or head may become trapped. In addition, partial detachment of the drop-side rail may create a space between the rail and the mattress, allowing a child to fall or roll into the gap, causing entrapment, suffocation or strangulation. Furthermore, full detachment of the drop-side rail may result in the child falling out of the crib and sustaining serious injuries like bruises, lacerations, broken bones and concussion.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Stork Craft have received 110 reports of drop-side malfunctions and detachment involving Stork Craft drop-side cribs. These incidents include fifteen cases of infant entrapment, four of which resulted in suffocation, and twenty falls from cribs which resulted in injuries ranging from bumps and bruises to concussion.
The recall involves 2.1 million units of Stork Craft drop-side cribs with plastic drop-side hardware, manufactured by Stork Craft Manufacturing Inc. of Canada, 1,213,000 of which were distributed in the United States and 968,000 of which were distributed in Canada. The recalled cribs were manufactured in Canada, Indonesia and China, and were sold by major retailers, like K-Mart, Wal-Mart and Sears, across the country between January 1993 and October 2009. The recall includes Stork Craft drop-side cribs with manufacturing dates between January 1993 and October 2009, and Stork Craft drop-side cribs with the Fisher-Price logo which were manufactured between October 1997 and December 2004.
Consumers who are currently using a recalled model of Stork Craft drop-side crib should discontinue use of the defective product immediately and contact Stork Craft for a free repair kit in order to immobilize the drop-side rail of the crib. In the meantime, parents and caregivers should find a safer sleeping environment for their children, such as a fixed-side crib.
