Testosterone Therapy May Lead to Brain Damage, New Research Warns

On the heels of research linking testosterone treatments to heart problems, a new study warns that some men using TRT products may experience brain cell damage.

A new study examining the risks of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) suggests that side effects of low T treatment may cause neurological damage in some patients. In the study, researchers from the University of North Texas Health Science Center found negative impacts on brain health among Caucasian males who used prescription TRT products like AndroGel, Axiron and Testim. Heart Problems, Brain Cell Damage Linked to TRT

The findings of the testosterone therapy study, published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, indicate that Caucasian males with elevated oxidative stress may suffer brain cell damage from low T treatment, and the study results have raised additional concerns about the safety of testosterone replacement therapy, which has recently been tied to an increased risk of heart problems. “Our study shows that these negative effects occur only in Caucasian men with high oxidative stress,” the lead study author wrote. “I would tell Caucasian men to be cautious about taking testosterone, especially if their oxidative stress levels are high.” Oxidative stress occurs when the number of antioxidants in the body is lower than the number of free radicals, and has been tied to cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and an elevated risk of heart attack.

Adverse Effects of Low T Treatments

In addition to linking low T treatments to brain damage side effects in some patients, the researchers involved in the TRT study also noted that previous studies have found that between 20% and 30% of aging men either do not respond to testosterone therapy, or have a negative response to the treatment. These findings are particularly alarming in light of mounting research suggesting that many men using low T products have no need for testosterone therapy, and sometimes receive TRT prescriptions despite normal testosterone levels, or without ever even having their levels tested. Critics of testosterone replacement therapy blame aggressive marketing campaigns for a dramatic increase in the use of low T treatments among American men over the past decade, claiming that many men are encouraged to seek TRT treatment to combat the normal aging process, which is accompanied by symptoms like muscle loss, weight gain and a lack of energy.

In November 2013, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that testosterone products may increase the risk of stroke, heart attack and death among older males with certain pre-existing heart conditions. Another study published in January 2014 indicated that TRT treatments may double the risk of heart attack for young men with heart disease, and for men 65 and older with no prior heart conditions. If you took a low T treatment like AndroGel or Testim in the past, and you have since suffered a heart attack or another serious medication side effect, contact a reputable testosterone treatment lawyer today to discuss your legal options. You may have grounds to file a product liability lawsuit against the drug manufacturing company, in order to seek fair and timely reimbursement for your injuries.
