Personal injury claims have been filed on behalf of individuals who were exposed to hazardous asbestos and subsequently suffered from fatal conditions like asbestosis and mesothelioma. Asbestos is a fire-retardant material that was commonly used in the 1970s in construction and other industries. Because asbestos has a latency period as long as 30 years, asbestos claims are still being filed. As asbestos-related litigation continues, the total cost of asbestos claims is estimated to reach $200 billion to $275 billion.
