In 2008, drug firm Pfizer Inc. paid $894 million to resolve 90% of personal injury lawsuits filed on behalf of patients who claimed the company’s pain killers, Celebrex and Bextra, caused strokes and heart attacks. The largest portion of the settlement, which amounted to $745 million, went to settle personal injury claims, $60 million went to Attorneys General in 33 U.S. states and the District of Columbia, and the remaining $89 million resolved class actions alleging fraud in connection with Pfizer’s promotion of Bextra and Celebrex.
