A settlement of $51.5 million was finally reached with Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. in 2001, after a 14-month investigation into the 271 deaths and 700 injuries associated with the company’s tires. The investigation was conducted nationwide and found that Bridgestone/Firestone was aware of problems with its tires and failed to warn federal regulators.
