DePuy Orthopaedics, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, issued a recall of its metal-on-metal hip implants after discovering that they could shed metal fragments, causing serious injuries. Although the settlement is still pending, J&J has reportedly set aside $3 billion in a fund intended to compensate patients who have been injured by DePuy’s metal-on-metal hip implants. Some believe the final settlement could exceed $5 billion.
