Paxil maker GlaxoSmithKline agreed to pay more than $1 billion in 2009 to settle over 800 suits filed against the drug firm for its antidepressant medication. The settlement compensated Paxil users who claimed the drug caused heart birth defects in their children, and brought the total amount GSK paid to resolve Paxil-related lawsuits up to $2 billion or more.
