In 2007, Vioxx maker Merck & Co. agreed to pay $4.85 billion to resolve a class action lawsuit filed on behalf of the families of 3,468 Vioxx users who died of heart attacks and strokes. Merck established the settlement fund in 2007 after it set aside $1.9 billion to fight 26,600 lawsuits involving the company’s pain killer.
