No Reversal Agent for Xarelto Bleeding Complications

Xarelto (rivaroxaban) belongs to a new generation of anticoagulant drugs designed to prevent strokes in patients with atrial fibrillation, and was introduced in 2011 by Bayer Healthcare and Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen Pharmaceuticals unit. As soon as it hit the market, Bayer and Janssen promoted Xarelto as a superior alternative to warfarin, which has been the best-selling drug thinner for decades. According to the drug makers, Xarelto requires less monitoring during treatment than other anticoagulants, and is therefore easier to use. However, many patients have reported instances of severe bleeding complications with Xarelto use, where doctors were unable to control hemorrhaging.

Internal Bleeding Linked to Xarelto Use

Unlike warfarin, which has an approved reversal agent that allows doctors to control the blood thinning effects of the medication, newer anticoagulant drugs like Xarelto and Pradaxa have no such antidote, which puts patients at risk for death from severe bleeding complications. According to a report issued last year by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices, Xarelto ranked tenth among the drugs most frequently named as the suspected cause of complications reported to the FDA during the first full year the drug was on the market. In its report, the organization linked Xarelto to 2,081 serious adverse events in 2012 alone, including at least 151 deaths.

Xarelto Side Effect Reports “Steadily Increasing”

In May 2014, another ISMP report indicated that reports of Xarelto side effects were “steadily increasing,” as more patients used the potentially dangerous drug, with 680 adverse events reported to the FDA during the first quarter of 2013. The rate of Xarelto side effect reports even surpassed those associated with Pradaxa, which is a competing medication in the same new class of anticoagulants. Pradaxa was introduced by Boehringer Ingelheim in 2010, and quickly became one of the most widely-used blood thinners on the market. However, like Xarelto, Pradaxa was also found to be one of the medications most frequently cited in FDA adverse event reports.

An Experienced Xarelto Attorney Can Help

Bayer Healthcare and Johnson & Johnson face a growing number of Xarelto lawsuits filed on behalf of patients who allege that they suffered uncontrollable bleeding complications while taking the controversial anticoagulant. The complaints all involve similar allegations that the drug companies failed to provide consumers and the medical community with adequate warnings about the bleeding risks of Xarelto. If took Xarelto in the past, and you have since suffered uncontrollable bleeding or hemorrhaging, contact a knowledgeable Xarelto attorney today for legal help. You may have grounds to file a Xarelto lawsuit against Bayer and J&J, in order to seek fair and timely reimbursement for your injuries.
