Lawsuits Allege That These Side Effects Are Linked to the Use of IVC Filter Devices.

According to a growing body of research, patients implanted with an IVC filter to reduce the risk of blood clots and pulmonary embolism may face an increased risk of serious and potentially life-threatening complications. Among the side effects allegedly linked to IVC filters designed and sold by C.R. Bard and other device manufacturing companies are:

  • Device fracture
  • Migration of the device to other parts of the body
  • Chest pain
  • Build-up of fluid around the heart
  • Injury to nearby organs or blood vessels
  • Perforation of the inferior vena cava (IVC)
  • Lower-limb deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • Damage to the heart or lungs
  • Filter embolization
  • Emergency open-heart surgery to remove the device

Complications Potentially Linked to IVC Filters

IVC_FilterThe use of IVC (inferior vena cava) filters has increased dramatically over the past 30 years, and today, the devices are commonly implanted in patients at risk for pulmonary embolism, in order to reduce the risk of blood clots traveling to the heart or lungs and causing severe complications. However, serious concerns have been raised recently about the potential risk of side effects from IVC filters, allegedly caused by devices that fracture or otherwise malfunction, migrating to other parts of the body and causing damage to nearby organs or blood vessels. In some cases, recipients of IVC filters may require emergency open-heart surgery to remove the faulty device, which can lead to additional complications and the need for long-term medical care.

In a drug safety communication issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2010, the agency warns that “known long term risks associated with IVC filters include but are not limited to lower limb deep vein thrombosis (DVT), filter fracture, filter migration, filter embolization and IVC perforation.” The FDA issued the warning after receiving more than 900 adverse event reports involving injuries from IVC filters since 2005, including 328 reports of device migration, 146 reports of embolizations, 70 reports of inferior vena cava perforation, and 56 reports of device fracture. In another safety warning issued in 2014, the FDA recommended that IVC filters be retrieved within 29-54 days of implantation to avoid potential complications, as long as the risk of pulmonary embolism has subsided.

Consult an Experienced IVC Filter Attorney Today

With hundreds of thousands of IVC filters implanted in patients every year, the FDA is urging consumers and doctors to remain aware of the potential safety risks associated with the medical devices, and to consider removing the filters as soon as the risk of pulmonary embolism is reduced. Several product liability lawsuits have already been brought against the makers of allegedly defective IVC filters, and additional claims are expected to be filed on behalf of consumers in the coming months and years. If you have suffered chronic chest pain, organ damage or perforation of the inferior vena cava, and you believe an IVC filter to be the cause, you may be entitled to financial compensation for your injuries and medical bills.
