Fungal Meningitis Crisis Continues

Increasing Illness and Death Linked to Steroid Injection
According to figures presented by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) this month, there have been at least 58 confirmed deaths and 745 cases of fungal meningitis infections reported in connection to the steroid injections mixed by the Massachusetts-based NECC, which has since recalled its product and closed its doors. Unfortunately, the number of fatal infections continues to increase, with at least three new deaths reported since the CDC released its May report. Despite early information indicating that the risk of fungal meningitis would only extend several weeks after the initial outbreak, an April article published in the Journal of the American Medical Association suggests that new cases could continue to emerge throughout the rest of this year.
Fungal Meningitis Victims May Relapse
Even more alarming, a report published earlier this month in the New England Journal of Medicine indicates that even those individuals who previously recovered from the meningitis outbreak may face continuing risks related to a relapse of the disease. According to federal regulators, an 80-year-old man who previously received meningitis treatment for four and a half months relapsed and had to be hospitalized. The risk of relapse has raised serious concerns about the effectiveness of the current anti-fungal treatment, which includes the drug voriconazole, with liposomal amphotericin added when necessary. Unfortunately, voriconazole has been associated with a number of serious side effects, including memory loss, nausea and cognitive problems.
