Study Finds Increased Risk of Risperdal Gynecomastia Side Effects Among Middle-Aged Men

A new study shows that middle-aged men may also be at risk for breast growth side effects of Risperdal.

According to the findings of an important new study, middle-aged men taking Risperdal may have a significantly higher risk of experiencing abnormal breast growth – a condition known as gynecomastia – which has previously been reported among boys and young men taking the controversial antipsychotic drug. If you took Risperdal in the past, and you have since suffered breast growth side effects or another serious medical complication, our consumer advocates at the Consumer Justice Foundation can help. We are dedicated to protecting the rights of consumers harmed by allegedly defective medications, and can help put you in touch with a knowledgeable Risperdal lawyer today.

Risperdal Breast Growth in Older Men

Researchers involved in the Risperdal study, which was published as a letter to the editor in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology on August 6, conducted a nested case-control analysis involving a cohort of men between the ages of 40 and 85. Although most concerns about Risperdal and male breast growth have focused on boys and young men using the atypical antipsychotic, this new Risperdal study indicates that middle-aged men taking Risperdal have a 69% higher risk of suffering from gynecomastia side effects, compared to men taking no antipsychotic drugs, and a 40% higher risk compared to men taking other antipsychotics.

Potential Side Effects of Risperdal

Risperdal (risperidone) was initially introduced in 1993 as a treatment for adults with schizophrenia, but the drug has since been approved to treat children diagnosed with bipolar disorder, irritability, autism, aggression and certain behavior disorders. In recent years, serious concerns have been raised about the safety of Risperdal, as mounting research has linked the atypical antipsychotic to an increased risk of life-altering side effects, including heart attack, diabetes, stroke, tardive dyskinesia, and abnormal breast growth in boys. According to some reports, boys taking Risperdal have developed breasts measuring as large as a 38D cup size, with many young men requiring surgery to remove the breast tissue.
